October 26: Recording garbage.
On Thursday, Metro High School students
brought in bags of garbage from home. Each bag was marked with the
quadrant of the Columbus from which it came (Northeast, Southeast,
etc.), and was randomly assigned to a group of 5-6 students to record.
Each bag was weighed intact, then the contents were carefully separated
by material type. The contents were further separated into
distinct categories used by
the Garbology Project.* Items in each category were carefully
weighed, to allow students to complete a detailed profile of the
contents of each bag. (Note: any addressed mail or other material with
personal identifiers was immediately set aside from the other contents
of the bag, weighed and shredded before being discarded for recycling.)
