This piece
titled, "What? So What? Now What?" was written by John, Meagan
and Sarah; it was edited by Samuel and Alex. The piece consists
of four parts. The first part is the question, What? which will
be asked then answered. This question is asking about what we
are studying. The next question that will be asked and answered
is, So What? which is asking why we are studying Garbology. This
is the second part. The final question is, Now What? basically,
how will this affect us as students. This is the third part. The
final part is about what the Metro School is doing to improve
our trash habits. Thank you for reading this, and remember,
RECYCLE!

What? So What? Now
What?
What are we studying?
We are currently studying Garbology, the archeology
of our present civilizations and cultures. It covers the disposal of
trash, our trash habits, and how they affect our environment. Garbology
helps us look at our current trash disposal habit, then find out what we
are doing wrong so we can correct our mistakes.
Why are we studying
Garbology?
We are studying this topic for a few reasons.
-
It covers a variety of subject matter, including
biology, math, reading, and even a little chemistry.
-
It makes us aware of our trash habits, and what
those habits are doing to the environment.
-
To help raise the knowledge of increasing the
trash problems.
How will all this affect us as students,
citizens, and leaders?
All of the information we collected screams at us
that we need to change our trash habits. We throw away too many
recyclables, hazardous waste, and items that can be composted. If we
continue to throw away all of this material, it will be dumped in a
landfill, and keep taking up space. This results in the continuous
growth in the landfill problem; which is that we are running out of room
in our landfills. If we are to change our trash habits, it will not make
much of a difference in our landfill problem. That is why we need to
share our findings with everyone. If we do not change our trash habits
soon, then we will run out of space in landfills, resulting in a crisis
that will affect present and future generations, all over the world.
What we are trying to say is, RECYCLE!
Some of the things our school is doing to help
improve our trash habits are:
-
Every Friday is pizza day, and each pizza comes
in an individual cardboard box. As you can imagine, this is a
problem because when you have about 90 students eating about 93
pizzas, this results in a lot of cardboard waste. But instead of
throwing the boxes away, we take them to a large recycling
container.
-
We have one trashcan for food, one for
recyclables, and one trashcan for trash in our lunchroom, so the
students can dispose of their lunch waste properly. At the current
time, we are using this system only on Fridays, but we are trying to
make the shift to start this every day.
-
All of the food waste from the lunchroom food
trashcan is put
into compost bins we call “Worm Bins.” Worms are placed in
these bins to aid in the decomposition of the food waste. We place
this waste in a large compost pile we call "Mount Metro."
