We dropped down today to do orientation dives with our newest archaeologists, MJ Harris and Maddy Eustis, and move debris off the site.  While finishing the orientation dive Fritz Hanselmann and MJ Harris found a large run of hull.  We measured the hull and videoed the exposed hull.  It extends one hundred and fourteen feet (114ft/34.7m).

Running out to the site.

After removing debris of the site we regrouped on the surface and discussed our next plan of action. While Mr. Foster and Dr. Smith videoed the recently discovered hull section, Anne, Corscadden, Fritz and MJ placed a third buoy on the site and continued the guideline from the second buoy that was fixed yesterday, to the end of the exposed stern section.

After laying the guideline, while film documentation continued, we accomplished the list of goals as set out last night.  A compass bearing on the stempost had a bearing of 330º.

As soon as we docked it was straight back to work as dive gear was broken down and the tanks were refilled all ready for tomorrow.  Unfortunately, because we only have a small, mobile compressor, it takes quite a while to refill the tanks.  This is were we need your help, can you help calculate how long it will take to fill a tank in the morning. . . .

“If one tank holds 80 cubic feet of air and it is one ¼ full, how long will it take to fill if the compressor pumps at 3 cubic feet per minute?”

Moving gear.

In the evening we sat down and discussed what we all did and saw on the shipwreck and went through what our plan is for tomorrow.  We are all extremely excited for tomorrow as it is when we go virtual and you all can come to the Clarksburg shipwreck with us!  To make sure that it all goes well everyone has been assigned a specific task.  Fritz and MJ will be topside manning the communication link between the underwater divers and Metro School.  Dr. Smith and Mr. Foster, Anne and Maddy will be underwater ready to take your questions and directions!

This is a very exciting time, a virtual field school on a Gold Rush era shipwreck, see you all tomorrow !!!
