Wednesday, August 1
Team 2: Rayanne Gordon, Adam Kowalski and
Keith Young
As always everyone rose early today, breakfast was served at the wee hour of 7:30am. At
8:30 everyone was loaded into the van with all of the gear, and we
headed off to John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park. Once we got there
everyone unloaded all of their gear, except for Dr. Corbin who
accidentally put her gear in the wrong vehicle. We spent two hours
snorkeling around the manmade site mapping cannons from previous
shipwrecks that are now in the stewardship of NOAA. There were a total of 15 cannons spread about the
site and one anchor. Snorkeling was our group’s favorite part of the
day, despite the invisible creatures that kept stinging our legs and
arms.

After lunch, we learned about
all the mistakes we made in the field, the biggest of which were obvious
things we should not have forgotten (labeling). We also learned about
the importance of orienting the artifacts in the drawing. These points
really came across, as we had to draw a map of the site with another
team’s notes.

Next we moved on to developing
educational programs for the 1733 Wreck at Coffins Patch by creating
interactive and fun activities for middle school students. Each team
had different topics and we came together as a group to pick out the
really strong ones to work on further. The report will soon be sent to
the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary for them to review and
possibly incorporate into a real school classroom curriculum.

Doug Faunt, Mark Massom and Kate Harding.
Today it was our group’s turn to
do data entry from yesterday’s cataloging, a job that leaves very little
room for excitement. It consists of reading data off a hardcopy and
entering the information into the computer.

Teams work on preparing a site plan based
on other teams' notes. Foreground: Kate Harding, Marc Massom and Doug
Faunt. Background: Adam Kowalski, Keith Young and Rayanne Gordon.
Dinner consisted
of lasagna, garlic bread and a delicious salad prepared by Dr. Smith.
The after dinner lecture was given by Andy Hall which focused on the
history of the Tonawanda shipwreck, where we are very excited to
have our first dive tomorrow.
