Arrival at Crane Point. |
Artifacts recorded at the Marine
Sanctuary office on Monday and Tuesday, back on display at Crane
Point on Saturday. |
On Saturday morning, we made an excursion to Crane
Point Nature Center in Marathon to document a cannon that is part of the
Coffin's Patch artifacts, and were also able to see some of the items we
documented earlier in the week in a museum display. It was fun to
recognize the items we'd handled and documented earlier in the week at
the marine Sanctuary headquarters were already back on public display.

We continued on to Key West where we visited the Mel Fisher Maritime
Museum to document an anchor that also part of the Coffin's Patch
artifact set, and to talk to Corey Malcolm, Director of Archaeology at
the museum. He talked about
past and current projects, and showed us around the lab.
There was much information on the markings used by the Spanish, and it
clarified some of our questions that were raised during the cataloguing
of the coins.

Archaeologist, Corey Malcolm discusses the
conservation of wrought iron guns recovered from a 16th century wreck in
the Bahamas.
The rest of the afternoon was free time, which
included dinner and a 18:30 departure for Key Largo. Kate, Marc, Sam,
Keith, Adam, and James were serenaded by some local, um, characters,
who were soon joined by a clown. The students narrowly escaped their
situation as a forced audience by the timely intervention of Dr. C.

Cob, Anne Corscadden Knox, Doug Faunt, James Waterbury, Marc Massom,
