Monday, July 23
Hi to all,
First day in Florida Snorkel.
Everyone was up and ready to go after
only a few hours of sleep. Got to love the first day. Went to
Pennecamp State Park this morning to get used to snorkeling in teams.
It is a great place to try out a new skill. The cannons and anchor
didn’t get as much attention possibly as they could have but a lot of
energy went into learning how to stick with and work with partners.

After lunch we went back to Pennecamp
to meet up with Paige and Marissa, interns at the State Park organizing
the Great Annual Fish Count. We will be posting each day the numbers of
fish we count at each site along with the GPS of where we are
snorkeling.

We spent an hour learning about bars,
stripes and bands along with oscillated spots vs. blotches. Paige and
Marissa gave us a full kit full of tricks for identifying fish. A lot
of information in a short time, but it appears to have paid off because
we were able to spot the sergeant major, the rock beauty and the
yellowtail jack.
Now for putting the information into
practice each day.
This is a great team here in Florida,
some old hands at summer camp, some new, but everyone making METRO proud
by jumping in and helping with duties and chores – of course the idea
that the team that doesn’t pull their weight has to wear eye patches and
an inflatable parrot around all day does seem to spur them on.
I’ll write more as the week
progresses. This is a wonderful experience in a beautiful location pack
with exciting things to learn and see. I know we will come home with
lots of fish stories.
Cheers,
Dr. Sheli
