Thursday, July 19

Today was the third day of camp. Today’s class was titled DNA Testing. So as you can guess we were testing DNA. There are many different types of DNA, but we decided to use the most obvious one! Blood. We used horse blood (donated by our teacher Dr. Park) for obvious precautions.

What we did with the blood was we wanted to get the only part that actually contains DNA which is the white cell. We learned the different types of cells in our bodies, and learned how to tell what you blood type is. Then we learned the definition of DNA: deoxyribose (sugar), nitrogenous (a base), and phosphate. We also learned the responsibilities of the cells in our body.

After experimenting with the blood, we began to learn how to make a mold our of seaweed gelatin. The mold is used for DNA testing. When we finished making the mold, we put it inside of our homemade trays, and then filled it up with the DNA. Our group believes that the funnest part of the day was when we were experimenting with the blood. All of us got to see and feel a bloody clot, which we later learned that the cells in your body create blood clots when there is a open wound and the blood absorbs the air.

In conclusion, our days at Metro have been interesting, exciting, and fun filled. This is a unforgettable experience, I’m very grateful for the opportunity.

Tuesday, July 24

Today we learned a little bit more about forensic anthropology. Professor McCormick gave us a very thorough lecture about forensics and digging up dead people. She showed us a lot of interesting pictures when she was out in the field digging up dead bodies. We also learned a lot about bodies and their decaying time. I think that everyone learned a lot about dead people and the types of death.

After we were done with the lecture, Professor Pinto then broke us up into groups and we went to different station and did stuff with bones. We got to sex, age, and ancestor bones from dead people.

A lot of the students were getting tired during class, so some people feel asleep and dozed off in outer space.
