On our canoeing trip today Nadeem and Blake’s canoe tipped over.  Cassie and Allie saw a turtle and a lot of bugs.  We all agree that it was tiring, hot, challenging, and very buggy.  We all saw wildlife, turtles, ducklings, dragonflies, and many, many mosquitoes.  Austin’s canoe also tipped over.  Austin also saw some purple flowers that he believes are called purple hearts.

Monday, June 11

Allie, Cassie, and Keanna washed and dried dishes.  After we were done at camp we drove to the shipwreck.  We divided the shipwreck into sections for each team to map; we got the last 25 feet.  We started to map the rows of pegs and planks.  We thought that today was going to be harder than the following days because we had to figure out what to do.  We also thought that it was cold and windy.

Tuesday, June 12

Today we headed off to 40 Mile Point at 8:33 am.  When we got there we headed down to the wreck with the measuring tape and our graphs with the rows drawn.

We set up our graphs with planks and rows on the same graph.  To make it easy to read we used two separate pieces of graph paper.  To make sure that we had the same amount of pegs, frames, keys, and trunnels we had Blake, Nadeem, and Keanna count them and make sure the graphs have the same amount of them.  A lot of the frames looked like they had been ripped out so we marked them on the graph differently so you can see what has happened to the ship.

The section of the shipwreck we had today looked different than it did yesterday.  It looked like a lot of the sand had been blown off by the wind, but not enough that we could see everything that we needed to so we could graph our section properly.  Because the sand blew away a lot of the sand we could see clearly how the 13th plank turns upward into the hull.  Also, we could see more of the first plank that we thought had been torn off.

Something else we saw today, that we didn’t see yesterday, was a supporting frame on the right side of column 0, the last column of the shipwreck on the right.  We thought this was interesting because it shows us, even more that this really used to be a ship and that it’s not just a piece of wood.

Our graphs are almost completely done.  All we have left to do tomorrow is graph where the keys are.

After we ate lunch the MUCC came to show us different species of prey that live in Michigan.  We saw five different species; red-tailed hawk, American kestrel, barn owl, bald eagle, and an Eastern screech owl.  They told us that there are 25 different species of predatory birds.  Our two favorites that they showed us are the bald eagle and the red-tailed hawk.

Nadeem:

  • Coolest thing was waiting for the birds to come
  • Funniest thing was Blake
  • My top excuses:
    • I don’t feel good
    • I have sand in my shoes
  • Lessons learned: Don’t express you opinion or you will get in trouble.

Blake:

  • Coolest thing was finding new things on the ship I’d never seen before
  • Funniest thing was Nadeem
  • Top excuses for today:
    • I have a stomach ache
    • But why?
  • Lesson learned: if we don’t put 100% into mapping this ship and difference between 100% and the places we are in will be lost and after the ship decomposes that much history will be lost

Cassie:

  • Coolest thing was seeing the red-tailed hawk and the bald eagle
  • The most challenging thing was removing the sand from the shipwreck so we could properly graph our section

Allie:

  • The funniest thing was when Ronny, Blake and Nadeem were arguing bout politics

Wednesday, June 13

Today we had a small assembly before we left to go back to the Joseph Fay.  At first we were told that we would not be returning to the shipwreck until tomorrow.  But, after we went over our data with Sheli and compiled our information.  Afterwards Sheli decided to give us some slack and let us go back and recount data.

The faculty: Ms. Devin, Ms. Anne, Dr. Sheli and Ms. McAllister.

When we got there we noticed that it was very hot and the sun was beating down.  We recounted the large, small, and total number of pegs and regraphed all of the columns.  Cassie took control and got everything into order.  We divided the duties between five of us (Cassie, Allie, Austin, Blake, and Nadeem) while Keanna dug to find the thickness of the frames and planks.  We used a scale of three square of graph paper equal to one foot.

We ate lunch on the beach as we did Monday.  After lunch we drove to a wetlands facility and got a tour on the boardwalks.

We then went to a quarry and searched for fossils and learned about the nearby area.

Happily we all then piled into the vans to come back to camp and change into bathing suits.  We went swimming in Ocqueoc Waterfall and ate a delicious dinner.  It was in all a very fun day.

Thursday, June 14

We had an early start getting up at 6:30 and leaving at 7:15.  We drove for an hour to Mackinac Island.  Our first attraction seen was Fort Mackinaw.  There were 50 boy scouts there to raise flags and watch over the fort.  The activities there included the rifle shouting along with the cannon shooting.  Then we split up for two hours to see the shops.

Later we drove back to camp to eat dinner at 5:00 pm.  Then we left to go to the Maritime Museum.  There we listened to a presentation about the restoration and preservation of the USS Monitor, which was one of the first ironclad warships of the Civil War.  The Monitor was the first ship to use a turret for guns instead of fitted cannons.
