Note: In addition to recording their
daily activities, students were asked to note each day the coolest thing
they saw or did, the funniest thing, the most challenging thing they
experienced, their personal top excuses, and the lessons they learned
that day.* Sunday,
June 10 Most of the
people in our group saw stuff like dragonflies, turtles, and ducks.
Some of the more interesting things we saw were all-white dragonflies, a
duck separated from its family, dragonflies on people’s heads, canoes
tipped over. We all thought the canoe ride was very interesting. Ronny
helped save Kristine and Cherrelle.

Keanna and Sydney on the Black
River.
Sydney:
- The coolest thing was all
the little fish on the banks
- The funniest thing was when
we flipped over in the boat and all of are stuff went floating down
the river.
- The biggest challenge was
having to learn how to steer the canoe
- My three excuses were:
- I’m too sleepy
- I don’t know how
- I don’t feel like it
- The evening lesson was to
listen to what people say, and also to keep promises.
Ronny:
- The coolest thing today was
that I felt like I was in the jungle/rain forest because I could
hear the different birds and the whole setting was great.
- The funniest thing is when
Cherrelle and Kristine missed the stop and almost drowned because of
the rapid water and I tied a bunch of life jackets and Nikki reals
it in downward.
- The biggest challenge was
the cooperation between Colin and I because he kept giving up.
- My excuses were:
- Black people don’t do
this
- I’m tired
Colin:
- The coolest thing that
happened was when Ronny and me saw two turtles and when we were done
on the canoe trip and were swimming around.
- The funniest thing was when
Cherrelle and Kristine had to stop where we were supposed to get off
but they just keep on going.
Kelsie:
- The coolest thing I saw
today was an all-white dragonfly because usually I only see
black ones
- The funniest thing was
when me and Precious would get attacked by bugs and scream at
the exact same time
- The biggest challenge
was killing all the spiders because all we had was paddles, but
we had to use those to steer.
- Excuses for today:
- I’m too tired
- I’m weak
- I have asthma
- Lesson learned: that no
act of kindness is ever ignored.

At the Joseph Fay site, we were surprised to
see that it wasn’t a whole ship. It was interesting finding out the
history of the ships and shipwrecks. The documentary we interesting,
how many ships that have been discovered. Our favorite parts were
mapping the ships, and the sphere.

Ronny and Colin recording
Sydney:
- The coolest thing was the
movie at the scanty
- The funniest thing was when
somebody saw the beer artifacts and said that the captains were
drunk
- The biggest challenge was
figuring out the graph.
Ronny:
- Funniest thing today was
when Dr. Sheli said, “these guys are going to be hot _____.”
- Coolest thing today was
mapping the Joseph Fay.
- Biggest challenge
overcoming my tiredness
Kelsie:
- The coolest thing I was
today was at the Joseph Fay shipwreck. We saw a sea spider with
a cool design on it.
- The biggest challenge
was figuring out how we were going to map out the shipwreck on
graph paper
- The funniest thing was
when Blake said; “I think the captain was drunk” and the lady
said, “Well they were German.”
- My excuses for today:
- I will embarrass
myself
- I will look dumb
- I’m to young
- Lesson learned is to be
patient
Tuesday, June 12
This morning at the shipwreck we
observed so many interesting things such as how the sand seemed to have
deposited itself on the ship. The weather was much warmer today so we
got tired faster and yet there were so many new discoveries like how
some of the wooden keys in the planks were missing and you could see
where they used to be. We had to count the drift pins, the pins from
inside to out. Kelsie had to add on to the graph of the planks because
we needed to add on a couple of feet. We found some important facts
such as there were 108 wooden pins, 64 drift pins, 316 outside-to-inside
pins, 24 wooden keys, and 534 inside-to-outside pins.

Field sketch of the Joseph S. Fay.
The Birds of Prey was the best
experience to see a bald eagle. Nobody in our group ever saw a bald
eagle. The birds we saw were all different, and they were all
interesting to learn about, and we will all be able to say from
experience now that we know all about the different types of birds in
Michigan. Other types of the birds were the barn owl, American kestrel,
red-tailed hawk, and screech owl. We also learned hot to classify the
birds.
Sydney:
- The coolest thing was
seeing the seagulls in the water.
- There was nothing funny.
- The biggest challenge was
staying focused
- I’m too tired
Kelsie:
- The funniest ting that
happened was the argument that Precious and me had about which side
of the shipwreck has more bugs.
- The biggest challenge was
having to start all over with the whole graph because we did it
wrong
- The coolest thing was
whenever we got something done right because it feels good to get
something done.
- Top excuses for today:
- I’m busy
- I don’t know how
- You’d be better at it
then me
- Lesson learned: that you
need to use teamwork to do something right.
Wednesday, June 13
Today Sydney had a great idea.
Her idea was to make a key to graph all the nails, drift pins, wood
keys, and deck pins. This is what the key looked like:
Then we went to the wetlands. The wetlands are a
kidney of an ecosystem. It filters out the water. The water in the
wetlands is slowly decreasing because of low water level. The trees are
growing fast because of the low water level.

Fish identification class.
Along with the adventures of
today, we learned about fish and how they are classified. We learned
that certain fish have different abilities on their size. We also
learned about the lateral lines on every fish. Some fish have fatty
fins and breeding tubes. But every fish have dorsal fins, tail fins,
and fins.
Kelsie:
- The coolest thing today was
swimming in the waterfalls
- The funniest thing was when
me and Allie were making fun of the Da Vinci Code while we were
swimming
- Top excuses for today:
- I’m in a horrible mood
- I’m too busy
- I’ve got a headache
- Lesson learned: no matter
how bad of a mood you are in, you have to be strong
- The biggest challenge was
trying to buy all I needed at Kmart in about 5 minutes.
Thursday, June 14

Colin on cannon duty.
Today we left camp an hour early
so we could get the ferry across to Mackinac Island. When we got there
we went to Fort Mackinaw. As we were standing in line all the boy
scouts came and started putting flags up around the island after that,
we saw a rifle and cannon demonstration. We went on a tour with a girl
named Lilly. She showed us all the toys the kids had to play with. For
example they had yo-yos, cup in ball, and Jacob’s ladder. There were
tons of shops on the island. There were mostly fudge shops where we
were able to sample different types of fudge. We left on the ferry at
2:30pm and passed the Mackinac Bridge.

The ferry ride home.
Kelsie:
- The coolest thing I saw
today was the court reenactment that they put on outside. Although
it was burning hot outside, I sat and watched all of it
- The funniest thing was
during court when he said “I know he’s from Ohio, so he may not be
alright.” He was found guilty of all charges. I thought he was not
guilty.
- The biggest challenge was
trying to ignore the burning hot weather so you can have fun
- Top excuses for today:
- It’s too hot
- I’m so tired
- I’m in a bad mood
- Lesson learned: listen to
what other people have to say and to consider it.
Friday, June 15
Kelsie:
-
The funniest thing today was when Colin put on my
giant sunglasses. It was very funny because the glasses are so
girly and huge and I took a picture of it.
