Note: In addition to recording their daily activities, students were asked to note each day the coolest thing they saw or did, the funniest thing, the most challenging thing they experienced, their personal top excuses, and the lessons they learned that day.*

Sunday, June 10

Our team was to collect as much data as we can about what we saw and heard.  We wrote down everyone’s job for today.  We saw ducklings and Allen saw a frog.  Everyone saw spiders.  We saw daddy long legs and black and white looking spiders.  Kamara and Fralisia saw a jumping spider on the water that was a tan color and about an inch long.  We thought of an analogy about canoeing compared to how Metro is.  You will have struggles but figure them out along the way.  Michael got his boat flipped over.  Michael saw a weird animal that was a little bit bigger than a chipmunk with a slightly large head.  He thinks he seen a beaver too.  We were all tired and some of us fell asleep and we had lots of fun.  There were lots of colorful dragonflies and big pretty butterflies.

On the river.

Michael T.:

  • The coolest thing was all the flowers
  • The funniest thing was when we went over a les
  • The most challenging thing was staying up right

Fralisia :

  • Coolest thing was canoeing for the first time
  • Most challenging thing was trying not to tip over
  • Funniest thing was when Kamara flipped over
  • My excuses:
    • I’m a girl
    • I don’t know how
    • I can’t

Kamara:

  • The coolest thing was when we were canoeing and Fralisia and I just got the hang of canoeing.
  • The lesson I learned was from canoeing, that you should not grab the branches or run into the branches while canoeing.
  • The funniest thing that happened was when Fralisia and I ran into a hanging bush.  I put my foot up to kick off of it but the canoe kept going and it pushed me back off of my boat.  Then all of these spiders’ just different shapes, sizes, and forms were everywhere, crawling over everything.  It was so scary.
  • The most challenging thing was keeping my paddle in my hand, not freaking out and being paranoid about spiders, and getting the hand of steering and canoe.
  • My favorite excuses:
    • This is too confusing
    • You are going to fast
    • What are you doing?

Monday, June 11

Today we went to the Joseph Fay shipwreck.  We had to measure the left over of the Joseph Fay.  Allen wrote out the graph while Fralisia and Antonio measured each plank and nail.  Michael swept sand off the planes so that Fralisia and Antonio could see.  Kamara took measurement notes and Kamara and Michael also made sketches.  Allen is now loosing his voice and getting sick.  After that we went to the gift shop and we went up to the lighthouse.  It was interesting.  We ate lunch.  Then we went to the Marine Sanctuary and watched a movie on shipwrecks.  Some of us thought the movie was interesting and some of us were a little tired.  We also got a little tour of the museum by the college students.  They told us how the E.B. Allen, the Windiate, and the Propeller Pewabic sunk.  Then they showed us the sphere globe and the airplane traffic, which was pretty cool.  Today was a long and frustrating day and we were all really tired.  We all got through it.

Ceiling planks and frames on the Joseph S. Fay wreck.

Michael T.:

  • The coolest thing that happened today was that none of us knew what the wreck looked like so we did not know we were looking at it.
  • The most challenging thing today was the mapping for me
  • My excuses for the day:
    • I don’t know how to do this thing
    • I am too dumb
    • Nobody wants me to help

Kamara:

  • The funniest thing was the feeling I got and the reaction of others when we saw the shipwreck.
  • The coolest thing was seeing the lighthouse and the globe sphere
  • My favorite excuses:
    • This is too much
    • I am too tired
  • The most challenging thing was figuring out how to do the measurement for the shipwreck

Tuesday, June 12

Today we wet to the shipwreck.  We made more progress today and everyone pitched in.  Since we had that discussion about how we are going to do the shipwreck at the Marine Sanctuary Museum.  It helped a lot for today.  We knew more of what we were supposed to do and look for.  Michael did something for today and Kamara did her sketch so that it was perfect so that was really good.

Archaeologists from the Thunder Bay National Marine Sanctuary.

The people from the Wildlife Encounters came and talked to us about the different types of species of birds in Michigan.  There are over 200 different species in the state of Michigan and 25 of them are birds or prey.  Allen’s favorite bird was the bald eagle, which was nearly extinct by the cause of water pollution; one of its wings was smaller than the other and when he was flapping his wings the instructor spinned around so that the hawk could keep his balance.  Fralisia’s favorite bird was the barn owl.  The barn owl’s ears are in two different places and can detect where the sound is exactly coming from.  Michael’s favorite bird was the Red Tailed Hawk.  They don’t get their red tail until they are two.  They use it up and out go that they don’t get their waste in their nest.  Antonio’s favorite bird was the American kestrel.  It was small and dove to get it’s pray at about 40 miles per hour.  Kamara’s favorite bird was the screeching owl.  This bird was so tiny with these huge round-coned shaped eyes.  They do no screech and they are nocturnal.

After we did that we lay around, talked, and played and did our journals.  We had an early start and finish.  Later on today we are going to be watching a movie and eating dinner.  Today we were lazy and boring and lay around.  It was soon to have a couple of hours to relax.

We are really coming along as a team and working together and listening to each other.  We are all contributing and doing something to build what we have.

Today Allen caught a chipmunk in the game room with his friends.  They let it go after a while, but he thought that was the funniest and coolest thing for the day.  Fralisia thought the funniest thing for today was when she tricked Cherrelle in say that it was a fire and Cherrelle jumped up and almost fell out of her bed.  Kamara thought the funniest thing for the day was watching Precious act like a big whiney baby.  She is so funny.  She kept asking people to get her apple juice.  She’s weird, but I love her.  Antonio also thought the funniest thing was when the chipmunk was stuck in the game room.  Michael thought the funniest thing for the day was when the instructor was spinning around with the Bald Eagle.

This is our group.  We had a pretty okay day for today.

Michael T.:

  • The most challenging moment of today was counting all the nails
  • The funniest moment today was when the guy spun around with the eagle
  • The coolest moment was when someone found part of the lower hull
  • My excuse for today is I am too tired.

Kamara:

  • The coolest things for today was knowing what I was doing at the shipwreck and seeing the birds.  I saw this black rock that was turning pink
  • The funniest thing was watching Precious whine and be a big baby.  She acts just like a turning out bratty child.  She is so cute.
  • The lesson I learned today was to not lie around when there is nothing to do or else I will be late and not on time for things.
  • The excuse I wanted to use for today is it is not my fault.
  • The most challenging thing for today was staying cool instead of burning hot.  Also keeping my temper, my anger level to a minimum level.  People did things were just getting on my nerves.

Wednesday, June 13

Today we put our information together about the shipwreck.  We didn’t have all of the information so we had to go back to the shipwreck and get what we needed.  Fralisia counted the knees and the keys.  Michael counted the big nails, and small nails.  Kamara re-counted the big nails because Michael asked her and that was a good thing because he was off a little.  Antonio and Allen continued to measure the pegs.  Antonio also counted the wooden nails and Kamara finished her sketch.  The group was glad that we had that discussion this morning to find out what we needed and didn’t need to get from the shipwreck.  That was really good.  We also learned about fish.  It was kind of boring for us because some of us went to Stone Labe and learned about the fish.  We all went swimming except for Fralisia.  She wasn’t ready and didn’t want to go.  Michael went, but didn’t swim.  We all had a great time so that was good and we had a pretty okay day.

Outer hull planking.

Kamara Willoughby:

  • My favorite thing for today was swimming.  I had a great time sliding off the small waterfall.  I wasn’t planning to get my hair wet, but I jumped in once and it was fun.  Then they told me it was leeches in the water, but Mrs. Sheli said they were just small little worms.  That they were harmless.  I was still a little too shaky to get back in the water.
  • The funniest thing for today was when we went to K-Mart and everybody busted out of the van because we only had ten minutes.  We made it back in time.
  • The excuse I wanted to use for today was my attitude that was stuck inside of me that was going to stop me from having a great time.
  • The lesson I learned for today is to let some things go because not everything will float your boat.
  • The most challenging thing was trying to go to sleep.  I know we had to get up early, but I could not fall asleep.  It was hard to fall asleep even when it was quiet in the dorm.

Thursday, June 14

Today we had to get up early and leave by 7:30.  We were KP today and I think we did a pretty good job at doing it.  We had to go to Mackinaw Island and we had a great time there.  We think that the counselors surprise was great.  We learned a little about Mackinaw Island too.  Michael learned that they have no care, but horses.  Antonio learned that their fort never got attached since it’s been there.  Kamara learned that soldiers were trained there and went to school there.  The 45 gunshot can go as far as three football fields and I think more than that.  We got to go around the small town to shop after the gunfire.  We got to stay until 2:30 and then got back on the ferry.  We all got there in time to catch it, so that was great.  At 5:30 we left to a lecture and we learned about the deterioration of the USS Monitor.  We didn’t get much from the lecture to be honest.  We came back and voted on a movie to watch.  It was Anchorman.  Kamara thought it was funny.  She never saw the ending, but did see the beginning.  Fralisia wasn’t feeling well so she didn’t see it.  Allen also liked the movie.

Getting on the ferry.

When we went walking around Antonio got a mood ring and some tasty vanilla flavored fudge.  Fralisia got a shot glass for her big brother, whom she loves so very much.  She got an Angus burger.  She said an Angus burger is a type of cow.  She said it was good, but not great.  Michael didn’t buy anything, but he did get a sample of some delicious fudge.  Then he found a quarter on the ground and got a gumball from the gumball machine and won a box of chocolate that was choclately amazing.  Kamara got some crocs for Precious and we got two free t-shirts and we got to choose the design we wanted on it.  She got a purple design and I got a pink design.  I bought a bracelet for my big sister Samira, who graduated from high school and going off to Kent State for college.  Next I bought Precious some French fries and she put barbeque sauce on them.  Anne had one and she didn’t like it.

Michael T.:

  • The funniest moment was all the ruined
  • The coolest thing was al the horses
  • The most challenging thing was my…
  • My excuse was I am too hyper
