Note: In addition to recording their
daily activities, students were asked to note each day the coolest thing
they saw or did, the funniest thing, the most challenging thing they
experienced, their personal top excuses, and the lessons they learned
that day.* Sunday,
June 10 The snake was
black and yellow; Nick stepped on the edge of the snake’s tail. The
banks seemed to be eroded because the trees were coming out like they
were going to eat us. There were two ducks running on the surface of
the water. There were also sharp rocks and a lot of sand at the bottom
of the water. We helped another group out when they were in danger.
There was sand under the water that felt like quick sand. Everyone in
the group was very proud of themselves when we reached the end of our
journey because we accomplished something together.

Ms. McAllister waits for a clearing the water ahead.
Lena:
- The coolest thing was when
we were going all slow and were just watching everything and
relaxing. Also waving and talking to people in houses or on shore.
- The funniest thing was
watching Kristine and Cherrelle trying to turn but they missed the
landing and had to go down through the rapids. And when Kristine
had to jump out and Ronny and Nikki threw a bunch of lifejackets
down to them.
- The biggest challenge was
just to keep paddling the entire day. My arms and shoulders were
really tired.
- My favorite excuses:
- I’m hungry
- My arms are tired
- The dingo took my baby
- Lesson learned: never give
up.
Nick:
- Coolest thing was finishing
first, grabbing oars and stuff out of the water.
- Funniest thing was Kristine
missing extraction point
- Most challenging thing was
spinning canoes, and swimming across the lake
- Excuses for today:
- Had to stay behind for
people/things net
- Too tired
Ian:
- Coolest thing today was the
plants in the water that were very exotic, the river was very placid
while we were on it, and the trees on the shore
- Funniest thing today were
people flipping their canoes, watching Head of State in the evening,
and Nick stepping on a snake.
- My excuses for today:
- My shoulder hurts
- The waters too cold
- The bus ruined the
canoe trip
Nikki:
- One of the coolest things
that happened today was when my partner and I were paddling really
slow and we could hear the water and observe all of our surroundings
- The funniest thing that
happened was when Kristine and Cherrelle missed the stop and kept
going towards the current. Ronny then tied about five life jackets
together and threw them down like it would really help them. Ronny
then started screaming for help and there was nobody there besides
us.
- One of the biggest
challenges that I faced was paddling for long periods at a time.
- My excuses for today:
- I’m too little to be
canoeing for long periods of time
- I’m too tired
Monday, June 11
The floating dock had a lot of different types of
nails. It was very difficult to graph the length of the wood and
measure accurately. We learned a lot of interesting facts in the
museum. We liked the globe and all the different images that appeared.
The documentary was also very interesting and we learned a lot of stuff
from back in the day. On the trip back from our adventure we were
talking to the freshmen about how Metro is very challenging. Today was
an okay day, we had our ups and downs but we got through it and we still
are ready to take on any adventure.

Recording on the wreck of the Joseph S. Fay.
Lena:
- The coolest thing I did
today was going to Lake Huron and looking at the lake. It was
really beautiful and I was amazed at all the different blues I saw.
The video of the lakes and the shipwrecks was cool too.
- The funniest thing I did
today was listening to Nick trying to explain to us that he really
did bike the wall of China. I think he was joking but I’m not sure.
- The biggest challenge today
was trying to stay focused during the graphing of the ship.
- My favorite excuses for
today:
- Give me food, I’m
hungry
- It’s too cold
- The dingo took my baby
- Lesson learned: the dingo
did not take my baby
Nick:
- Coolest thing was that
frickin’ globe thing
- Funniest thing was
convincing people I traveled to China
- Most challenging thing was
getting my graph to match up with the wreck.
Ian:
- Coolest thing was going to
the Marine Sanctuary
- Funniest thing was watching
Adnane get tripped
- Most challenging thing was
getting the correct data on the paper and graph.
Nikki:
- The coolest thing today was
the museum and how we got to see the documentary
- I don’t think there was
anything funny today because I was tired and didn’t find anything
amusing
- The biggest challenge today
was measuring the shipwreck and plotting all the points.
- My excuses for today:
- I’m not interested in
this
- I’m tired
- I think the lesson today
was even though you don’t want to do something you still have to do
it.
Tuesday, June 12
Today we went to the Joseph
Fay shipwreck to continue working on graphing and measuring our
section of the wreck.

Ms. Lusardi working on the wreck.
We finished graphing all the
main planks today. We also started working on measuring and graphing
where all of the planks were. We made a key to help us. We measured
just over half the pins and nails.

We were clearing off some of the
sand and Nick found the inner hull of the ship. He also found several
nails that you could see the rust on. Nikki found some hexagon shaped
nails in her part. The hull was made from white oak wood and it was
very smooth.
Since we got a lot done
yesterday, we got to help the people carry their scuba gear down to the
beach so they could go scuba dive down to where the rest of the
shipwreck was. They mapped it out and took pictures. We thought the
waterproof paper was cool.
We all really liked helping the
scuba divers and had a pretty good day. We also enjoyed the birds that
came.
There was an American kestrel,
Barn Owl, Red-tailed hawk, Bald Eagle, and a screech owl at the program
today. It was cool.

Lena:
- The coolest thing I
did today was help dig out the shipwreck. It was cool
finding the hexagonal shaped nails and the smooth wood. It
was also cool helping the scuba divers get ready.
- The funniest thing
today was when Kristine and Nick and I were trying to kill
all of the bugs right now. It is really funny but sad.
And when Ian kicked the
volleyball and broke the fire alarm.
- The biggest
challenge today was measuring where all the pins and nails
were. It was hard to remember where you had already
measured.
- My excuses for
today:
- My foot hurts
- I’m hungry
- The dingo took
my baby
- Lesson learned: not
to laugh at people.

equipment. Another thing that was really cool today was when that
bird guy came and talked to us about the birds
- The funniest thing that
happened today was when Fralisia said there was a fire and Cherrelle
was sleep and she jumped up. Her facial expression was hilarious.
- The biggest challenge today
was trying to count all of the pins in the wreck ship.
- The lesson today was when
you work hard you have advantage to do other things
Wednesday, June 13
We finished getting
all our information for our shipwreck. We got as much accurate
information as we could. At the wetlands, we got a tour of the site and
we learned a lot about the habitat. We also went to the quarry and
looked for fossils and rocks; we learned that the rocks were formed on
the ocean floor gazillions of years ago (millions/billions). After our
trip to the limestone quarry, we got to go to the Ocqueoc Falls to go
swimming for a few hours. We had a blast relaxing in the water. We
then learned about all the different types of fish in Michigan. We had
a lot of fun doing the activities and we learned a lot.

Ocqueoc Falls.
Ian:
- Funniest ting was Hayden
slipping off of the water fall into the water

“I have flip flops on” when we were climbing the rocks
Thursday, June 14
Today we went to Mackinac
Island. We took the ferry over to the island because no cars are
allowed. First, we went to For Mackinaw. The fort was built by the
French first and in 1761, during the Seven Year War, it feel under
British control. The Britains turned it from an earth and log fort into
a better, more protected, stone fort. In 1796, the Americans captured
the fort , then the British got it back in 1812, and finally the
Americans recaptured the fort in 1814. Soldiers were still kept in the
fort for a long time after the war was over. They mainly patrolled the
island, kind of like police. It was said to have been a very good post
to have. They stayed there until 1895 when they were finally removed.
When we were at the fort, we
watched a presentation by this man dressed up to look like they were
soldiers about the rifles and cannons they used. They fired their
riffles twice and the cannon once. Afterwards we got to keep the gun
shells. After that we walked around the fort and saw all of the
buildings.
And then…SHOPPING!
This evening we went back to the
National Marine Sanctuary to hear Dr. Tane Casserly, the maritime
archaeologist, talk about the shipwreck the Monitor. It was an
ironclad ship, only the second warship ever, and only stood 8 inches out
of the water. It battled the Virginia but only held her off, it
didn’t beat her. It was built by John Ericson, and was mostly known for
its rotating cannons. It kind of looked like this…

The cannons rolled around so the
actual boat didn’t have to move much. The six hour battle ended when
both the Monitor and the Virginia thought the other had
surrendered. The Monitor sunk December 31, 1862 while being
towed by the Rhode Island to North Carolina. It was caught in a
storm and it sunk.
We all had a really great time
both at Mackinac Island and at the lecture.
Nick:
- Funniest thing was scaring
people with the fake knife
Ian:
- Funniest thing was Blake
making fun of the Boy Scouts
- Coolest thing was getting

- Most challenging thing was
getting up to the fort on the island
- Excuses for today:
- It’s too hot
- My shoulder is too sore
- I’m too tired

Scouts at the flag ceremony on Mackinac Island.
Nikki:
- The coolest thing that
happened today was when we went to Mackinac Island. That was the
coolest thing that happened today because we got to see a lot of
history that occurred o that Island. After we went in most of
houses we got to have free time and explore whatever we wanted.
- The funniest thing that
happened was when I was talking to my sisters and they kept making
me laugh
- The biggest challenge was
trying to understand all the different things that were being talked
about in the lecture
- I wanted to us the excuse
that I was too tired to stay up in the lecture.

Sights on Mackinac Island.

funny because there were all different types of genres.
- The biggest challenge today
was trying to map the shipwreck on the big piece of graph paper.
- The excuse I wanted to use
was I don’t swim in nothing but pools.
