Note: In addition to recording their daily activities, students were asked to note each day the coolest thing they saw or did, the funniest thing, the most challenging thing they experienced, their personal top excuses, and the lessons they learned that day.*

Sunday, June 10

Kristine and Cherelle.

One way to start off what should be an exciting week is to go canoeing in a dirty, nasty, brown, ugly river.  Everywhere you looked was wildlife and little did we know, we were about to become part of it.  Seconds after we took off, people ran into trees, crashed into each other, and fell out of the canoes.  We spent 14 miles and 5 hours struggling through the Black River.  Lots of spiders and dragonflies swarmed our boat.  Our group saw lots of pine trees, oak trees, duck, birds and a turtle.  The thrill would only continue when two of our group members.  Cherrelle and Kristine missed a turn and went down a rapid.  Blake had to jump in and save them and all three were soaked.  Although Cherrelle and Kristine were safe, the day was not without lost items.  Journals were ruined, bags were wet and Blake lost a shoe.  Overall, the first day was exciting and we all learned a lot.

Michael S.:

  • Coolest things were fighting quick sand for shoes, learning to steer a canoe, and hitting trees
  • Funniest thing was my team members fighting bugs
  • My excuses for the day:
    • I want to go home
    • I’m too big
    • I’ve never done this before

Bryan:

  • Coolest thing was losing the paddle
  • Favorite excuse was I’m too tired

Cherrelle:

  • My favorite excuses:
    • I have asthma
    • I’m a girl
    • I’m sick
  • The coolest thing that happened was when me and my partner couldn’t stop so Ronny through us life jackets which did nothing
  • The funniest thing that happened was when Mike and Adnane’s boat was sinking in the back them they got stuck and Mike was sitting on land trying to dig the boat out then Blake and Nadeem came and saved them
  • The challenge was working together.

Kristine:

  • The coolest thing that happened to me was traveling 14 miles down the Black River and seeing all the wildlife.  Even though I didn’t like all the spiders, the wildlife was amazing and I had never seen anything like it.
  • The funniest thing that happened to me was Cherrelle and I missing the turn to end the trip and we went over some rapids.  Everyone was laughing as we went screaming down the river.  We had to jump into the water and we went from being completely dry to being soaked from head to toe.
  • One of the biggest challenges I had was learning on the fly.  None of us had any experience and we had to learn while going down a river.  We had to learn how to steer, row, and communicate to our partner.  Not knowing how to do these things resulted into running into trees, turning the wrong way, and getting very tired.
  • My excuses for the day:
    • I am too tired
    • I don’t have a map
    • The canoe won’t turn
  • Lesson learned: you need to listen to others and follow your heart.

Monday, June 11

Today we explored and mapped the Joseph Fay shipwreck.  We were surprised that it didn’t look like a ship.  Everyone was expecting a boat just on the beach and in reality it was only one part of the side.  Our group had to map the first 25 ft of the ship.  We found a way with the help of college students to map the ship.  It was windy and cold but we had to keep mapping.  After the wreck we went to a NOAA museum and learned more about various shipwrecks on the Great Lakes.  Now that we know about mapping, we are looking forward to tomorrow.

The 40-Mile Point Lighthouse.

Michael S.:

  • The most challenging part of today was suppressing my desire to go home and remain focused.  To tell the truth I’m sick of this place.
  • The funniest part of today was when Blake got yelled at for throwing rocks
  • The coolest thing was when we found the keys on the ship
  • My excuses:
    • I hate this place
    • I’m tired
    • I’m sick

Kristine:

  • The most challenging thing was not knowing how to map a shipwreck
  • My excuse:
    • I don’t know how to map
    • It’s cold

Tuesday, June 12

Today we went back to the shipwreck and the MUCC came to camp to show us birds.  It seemed like everyone enjoyed the wreck more because we knew what to expect and how to map.  However, unlike yesterday, it was HOT and everyone was miserable because we were in long sleeves.  We were able to see college students dive to the underwater wreck and that was very neat to watch.  After lunch, the MUCC came and brought birds or pray.  We were able to see a Bald Eagle, falcon, hawk, and owls.  The birds were very neat to see; how many times do you get to see an Eagle up close?  Overall, it was another fun day.

Bryan:

  • Coolest thing was when we found more of the boat under the sand
  • Most challenging was trying not to just lay down and do nothing.
  • Favorite excuse was I’m too tired.

Cherrelle:

  • The coolest thing that happened today was when Bryan started digging in the sand and found part of the ship that was under the sand.
  • The funniest thing was when I was sleep and Fralisia started yelling fire and I jump and almost hit my head.
  • The most challenging thing was trying to get everything on the graph we still have to figure out what’s wrong with our numbers
  • The lesson I learned was be careful with your number cause it can throw everything off.
  • The excuse I wanted to use was I have no idea what I’m doing.

Brian recording.

Kristine:

  • The coolest thing we saw were birds like bald eagle and a red-tailed hawk.  It’s not every day that you can see an endangered animal up close.
  • The funniest thing was when Fralisia yelled fire and Cherrelle jumped up and almost fell.
  • A challenge we had today was mapping the ship with no help.  Yesterday we had college students helping us and today they were diving.
  • My excuses:
    • I’m too hot
    • No one is helping us
    • Our section of the boat is too hard.

Wednesday, June 13

Today was the fourth day at camp.  We had a great time so far and today was more of the same.  We went back to the Joseph Fay.  After realizing how much we had left, we went to the ship and finished our graphs.  Everyone did a great job doing their job.  We accomplished a lot of the boat and we only have a few things left to finish.  We ate lunch and then headed to the wetlands.

We went to the Partridge Point Wetlands.  Even though every one was really thirsty, everyone was able to learn a lot.  It was the first time to the wetlands for a lot and we learned the importance of wetlands.  A lot of people gave donations to help the wetlands and wildlife.  After the wetlands we had an adventure at K-Mart.  Everyone ran like maniacs to get food and water.  Once that little adventure was over, we made our way to a rock quarry.

One of our favorite parts of the day was the rock quarry.  We got to pick up fossils and keep them.  We fund many corals, animals, and many other things in the rocks.  When we were done with the quarry, we went to a waterfall.

We went to the falls and after a short delay, mostly everyone got there.  We had to change and a few people got left but eventually most made it to the falls.  Tomorrow, we look forward to our “surprise”.  After a long day, we learn a lot about identifying fish and catching fish.

Michael S.:

  • The coolest part of today was when we went to the limestone quarry and looked for fossils.  In which were small animals and coral.
  • The most challenging thing today was also at the limestone quarry the rock we were walking on kept breaking and there were really steep slops, not to mention the baking sun
  • My top excuses today:
    • It’s too hot
    • I won’t do it
    • I’m bored

Cherrelle:

  • The coolest thing was being able to dig up the sand and see the inner hull
  • The funniest thing was when the bat flew in the room and everyone was screaming.
  • The excuse I wanted to use today was why do I have to work the boys aren’t.

Kristine:

  • The coolest thing I was saw the fossils.  I love rocks and it was so cool to see all these fossils.  We all got to keep a lot of fossils and I can’t wait to show them to my brothers
  • Today there were a few funny things that happened.  One was our K-Mart stop for food.  Everyone was so thirsty and hungry so we stopped at K-Mart.  Everyone ran into the store like wild animals and bought water, food, more food, and gum.  It was funny to see but is kind of sad because it was like we had never seen a store before.  Our shopping spree just shows how dependent Americans are on what most would call unnessesary snacks.
  • Another funny thing that happened was a bat flew into our room.  Everyone started yelling and running around.
  • One challenge we had was dealing with being thirsty, hungry, and cold.  We had to focus and pay attention even though we were miserable
  • My excuses:
    • I’m thirsty
    • I’m too tired
    • It wasn’t my fault we were left

A walk down the beach.

Thursday, June 14

Today was by far the most fun we have had.  Not to say the others were not fun, today was just amazing.  We got up early and went to Mackinaw City.  Once in Mackinaw, we took a ferry to Mackinaw Island.  There are no cars allowed on the island so the air is clean and it was very peaceful.  The first thing we did on the island we head over to Mackinaw Fort.  We saw a Flag Day ceremony and then experienced a reenactment of gun and cannon firing.  After the reenactment we explored the rest of the fort.  After a quick lunch, we went to the shops.  It was extremely fun to shop, even though the prices were ridiculous.  Everyone bought a lot of neat things.  Unfortunately, we had to leave and go back, but our day wasn’t over yet.

After the island, we went to a speech on the shipwreck Monitor.  Tane Casserley, a maritime archaeologist, gave the lecture.  It was very interesting and we all learned a lot.  We are looking forward to tomorrow.

Bryan:

  • The coolest thing that happened was the boat ride to Mackinac Island, a very boring boat ride to be exact.
  • The funniest thing we did was watch Anchorman
  • The most challenging thing was carrying the lemonade jugs around all day for $3.00.
  • Favorite excuse was I’m too tired.

Cherrelle:

  • The most challenging thing was not spending too much money
  • The funniest thing was watching the little kids help fire the cannon
  • The coolest thing was riding the ferry.

Kristine:

  • The coolest thing today was just seeing and experiencing Mackinaw Island.  I had a lot of things to choose from but I chose the island because it was so unique.  How many times do you get to shop, see a fort, and see no cars all at the same place?
  • The funniest thing that happened was Nick tricking everyone with his fake knife.
  • The most challenging thing was conserving money with the high prices.
