Description: Menemon Sanford was a coastal paddle steamer, launched in 1854 and originally running between Bangor, Maine and Boston. She might be considered a "hard luck" boat, having run ashore at least twice before her final loss. In December 1862, while carrying a regiment of New York infantry, the Sanford struck hard on Carysfort Reef near Key Largo, and became a total loss. All the crew and the soldiers were safely evacuated, although the ship's pilot was placed under arrest by the colonel of the regiment, who deemed the accident to be "so palpably the result of the most criminal negligence, if not design!"

Restrictions: 18 years or older. Requires current open water diving certification and dive insurance.

College Credit: College credit under Directed Studies available upon coordination with PAST

Enrollment Limit: 12

Application Deadline: As soon as full or June 15, 2008
