Today was another
beautiful day in sunny Key Largo, sort of. We saw our first major
weather system move over us today and give us a much needed local
shower. Thankfully the water was clear and calm going out; no sea
sickness for us!! Below the surface was just as consistently calm and
clear, exactly what you would expect from the Florida coast. Even when
the rain came it was warm, refreshing and a pleasant breeze that gave us
all a boost of energy (well, maybe just the crazy Californians).

Reid and Erin work on transferring information from
their dive slates to their project notebooks. Notes from a lecture on
ship construction remain on the board.
Out of the water and
into the classroom/office has been the norm of the afternoons, and today
was no exception. Thankfully every group was able to make significant
progress on the overall site map, and nobody ran into any major set
backs or missteps. The evening lecture was given by Nancy Diersing of
the National Marine Sanctuary on their work and primary objectives. The
lecture was informative and eye opening seeing how much the sanctuary
must work not only to maintain the integrity of sites around the area
but also to educate as many people, both residents and visitors, on the
natural and cultural wonders of the entire Florida Keys region. By now
we have all become accustomed to being here and it will be very hard to
say goodbye and leave this little slice of paradise (size subject to
interpretation).

Nancy Diersing of
the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary discusses a wreck on the
sanctuary's Shipwreck Trail.
