| The Sidewheel
Steamer
New York
There are no known photographs of Menemon Sanford, but photos do
exist of very similar vessels. One of these is the sidewheel steamer New
York, shown here at Aiken's Landing, Virginia, waiting for exchange
of prisoners. New York is a close contemporary of Menemon
Sanford, and encompasses many features, fittings and equipment
common to both ships. The Library of Congress holds a
remarkably-detailed glass plate negative of New York, which
reveals a remarkable level of detail. Use the Zoomify tools below to
explore this remarkable image.
