ABO blood typing test.

Swati and Sara pipetting out white cells.

Before we began our lesson of the day we wrote on the white board about what we learned about yesterday, today we talked about DNA and blood.  We were given an introduction to DNA.  Then we were taught how to separate the white blood cells in horse blood.  During lunch we watched an episode of CSI and then wrote reflections about the episode.

We then cleaned off our footprints from the previous day.  After that we were taught how to make the gel for Agarose Submarine Gel Electrophoresis.  This is a method to examine someone’s DNA and even compare it to another person’s DNA, which is very helpful in the forensics field.  We then examined an example of an Agarose Submarine Gel Electrophoresis that Dr. Park brought.  She then taught us how to use a micropipette to load the DNA in the wells.  We used the example gel to solve a crime. Then we started watching the movie GATTACA, which talks a lot about genetics, and has very good science in it.
