Twenty students will be
introduced to a wide array of environmental science subjects as they map
and interpret the remains of a 19th century ghost town situated on the
shores of Lake Michigan. The once-thriving community of Rockport
exploited the natural resources of the area with the technologies of the
time. The remains left behind will be the focus of the study and their
interpretation will provide the State of Michigan with valuable data
that can be leveraged in the promotion of eco-tourism.
In combination with mapping the ghost town site, students will be
introduced to the natural and cultural modern landscapes of Michigan
including the wetlands, fisheries, history of technology, and
preservation movements of the region.
Restrictions: Cultural Landscapes will
involve moderate levels of physical activity including hiking, swimming,
and canoeing.
Credit:
The Cultural
Landscape program is intended to provide each participating student with
40 hours of high school physical fitness credit toward the 120 hour,
curricular requirement. Students who are eligible will also have the
opportunity to enroll in the OSU course ANTH 294 for 2 credits.
