Lya, Kristine, Antonio & Colin
Today was a long day. We left the camp
at 7:30 to go to Bell. We arrived at around 8:30. Lya and Kristine left
with Ms. Rector to survey the shoreline of the area. They were out until
11:00. They had a few discoveries.

The first was the discovery of a road.
It looked like it was still in use, but the small group theorized that
it was used in the logging camp. They then came upon a clearing, which
stretched along the road. There, Kristine found several pieces of scrap
metal embedded in the sand. Ms. Rector came upon a metal pole sticking
up out of the ground. Next, Ms. Rector led them even further into the
forest beyond the clearings, and there they found a metal cable. This
cable was strange because it was grown into the tree. In other words,
the cable had been nailed or fastened to the tree and over the years,
the tree grew around it/over it. The group followed the cable over the
ground for a few paces, and then it mysteriously cut off.
After leaving this area, the group
doubled back and covered the entire shoreline. They looked for any signs
of a dock, because one of the resources claimed that the ribbing of the
dock could still be seen. Finally, at 11:00, the group found a trail
back into Bell and made their way back to the campsite.

Meanwhile, Colin and Antonio were busy
surveying within the woods. They calculated paces on the one-mile trail.

Anne let us leave Bell at about 11:20,
and we made our way back to Alpena to go to the Besser Museum. There we
ate lunch, and worked in a classroom. Lya worked on developing a plan of
action from that point, which mostly consisted of a to-do list full of
objectives for the next two days. Kristine helped her by working on
drawings of what we wanted our marker to look like, and coming up with
ideas for the to-do list. Antonio and Colin helped recreate the map of
the Besser Bell area.

After our study time, an executive
director of the museum led everyone on a tour. Kristine took plenty of
notes and Antonio and Lya asked a few questions. After the tour, they
had some down time before going to the Planetarium.
When everyone got back to the camp,
they ate dinner and then came back to the study to work on the items on
the to-do list.

Group 2: Allison, Michael, Deidra &
Adnane
Today we mapped another area in Bell
Village. We mapped the “ruins” the are believed to be the Fisher House –
owned by the Fisher family who owned the General Store that we partially
mapped yesterday. There were trees fallen all through the site, and the
mosquitoes were going insane. It was fairly difficult to map the first
of the two depressions in the site, but it was manageable.

After this we ate lunch in the front
tree lot of the Jesse Besser Museum. Lunch was followed by a tour of the
museum, a question and answer session with our guide, then a chance to
look around on our own. We then went in to the Planetarium and were
shown methods of recognizing constellations. Several students fell
asleep, which was fairly amusing to those of us who managed to stay
awake.

We then returned to the campground and
ate dinner, studied, and discussed plans with the other groups. Finally
we went stargazing out in the fields in the middle of the camp. We
attempted to locate the stars and constellations that we’d learned
earlier at the Planetarium. Bed finally followed, and we all got a
well-needed rest.

Daily Quote:
Allie: “I’m gonna cry.” “Shut up
Adnane.”
Deidra: “I hate my life.”
Adnane: “Butt bump!”
Michael: “Ow, tree.”
Excuses of the Day:
Allie: “I’m itchy! Everywhere!!”
Deidra: “I’m tired!”
Adnane: “There are trees EVERYWHERE!”
Michael: “I’m too tall!”
Team 4
Guadalupe, Sydney, Shane & Joseph
Our task today was
to be organizers. We grabbed the equipment every team was going to need
today in order to continue mapping Bell Village. We ask also checked to
see that everyone was doing their jobs, and then packed things into the
vans.
At Bell Village we
helped map the site. Lupe and Shane worked on finding lengths and Sydney
plotted them into a coordinate plane. Joseph wrote detailed notes on the
artifacts we graphed

We then went to
eat lunch. While we were eating we all heard Joyce say “I like it when
people die.” We laughed. It was funny because her job relies on people
dying.
We then went to
the Besser Museum of northeast Michigan where we learned about
Michigan’s lumber history and about the sky (stars).
