The second week of the
project has several objectives. First, the team would like to create a
photomosaic of the bow section of Arizona. In September and
October 2000, the NPS-SRC worked with National Geographic Society and
TruVue Imaging to create a video-mosaic of Arizona’s forward
section that appeared in the June 2001 issue of National Geographic
Magazine. Advances in digital photography and off-the-shelf photo
editing software since 2000 should allow for a more-accurate and
less-labor intensive mosaicking process. The NPS team will experiment
with a variety of methodologies to create an accurate, high-resolution
mosaic. Second, the archeologists will collect a variety of physical
samples and other data for scientists working on different aspects of
the USS Arizona Preservation Project. For example, the team will
be collecting oil, sediment, concretion and water samples for partner
scientists at University of Nebraska-Lincoln, Harvard University, the
Medical University of South Carolina and the National Institute of
Standards and Technology. See the project
research rationale to see how each of these samples fits into the
overall project objectives.
