Marine Invertebrate Science
Dr. Thomas C.
Shirley, Professor in the Fisheries Division of the School of Fisheries
and Ocean Sciences at the University of Alaska Fairbanks, will oversee
research on marine invertebrates. Dr. Shirley’s research focus includes
animal life ranging in size from microscopic metazoans to more familiar
“macrofauna” such as crabs and shrimp. A series of core samples of sediment
around the wrecks will be taken, screened through a sieve and examined in
the laboratory for extraction and identification of animal specimens. Small
traps will be used to collect larger animals, these, along with those
recorded on video during the ROV survey of the site, will be identified to
the most precise taxonomic classification possible and the sex and
reproductive state recorded, if distinguishable.
