Second Day: Clearing the Site
Tuesday, July 12

Today was another sunny and hot day on Middle Island. John Halsey, Michigan's State Archaeologist, joined Ryan Riordan, Stephen Riordan and myself again today for his last day on the site. I hope John leaves us with fond memories of the site, but most likely the only thing he will remember is a bunch of lawn work. John, Wayne Lusardi, and Stephen spent most of the day clearing brush around the main house and the boat house so that we can start taking detailed photos of the structures and their architectural features, and start working on scaled drawing of the important aspects of the structures.  Ryan and I spent most of the day mapping the island with the Total Station.

Swimming near the station site.

Since we all brought our snorkeling gear today, we spent lunch snorkeling over the shipwreck that is located near the station.  Locals believe the wreck to be the Portsmouth.  There is not much left of it, just the starboard stern, but you can tell that the ship was huge.  We'll have to take a closer look at it later.  That's all for today.
