Eighth Day: Storm
Monday, July 18
Once again we headed out to Middle Island and it was a beautiful day. The
sun wasn’t too bright and a breezes coming from the southwest felt pretty
nice. Wayne Lusardi did what he always does; he kept mapping the main building.
Wayne’s been working on it the whole time we have been here but he’s done a
great job and is almost finished -- maybe one more day. While Wayne was doing
the mapping, Stephen Riordan went around the area collecting artifacts, mostly
around the farther structures, the cabins across the way. Andy Weir and I kept
mapping the whole area with the Total Station. Today we got the shore line
west of the main and boat house done, along with some cool features like
the place where a cannon was supposed to be. Then we took our break at
noon, like always, and discussed what else needs to be done.

Andy Weir surveys the main house prior to the storm.
We all decided
none of just were really done with what we started at the beginning of the day,
so we just continued with that. Once we got started again the winds picked
up a little and after it got stronger we all just kind of met at one place
looking out at the storm that was supposed to hit late that afternoon. So
after about ten minutes of discussion, we decide to get out of there. It
only took us ten minutes to pack and get to the boat. As we arrived at the
dock the sky turned dark and it started to rain. We all hopped in the boat
and headed off, but as we started to go our motor stopped and we were about
to crash in to some huge rocks. Luckily we got the motor working again and
we were docked and headed for cover. As we were running to one of the knocked-down cabins we saw a big tent set up and we just stayed there
'til the
storm was over. The storm only last about 20 minutes but luckily for us it
took so long for us to decide what to do or else we would have been stuck in
the middle of the storm on only a 20- foot long boat. Thankfully for our
stubbornness for wanting to wait a little while to head back, or who knows
what would of happen if we were stuck in the middle of the storm on the
water. Everyone came back save and sound, and we’ll be ready to go back at
it tomorrow.

After the storm.
