Field School Objective

The 2005 Middle Island Life-Saving Station Field School aims to introduce students to the method and theory of historical archaeological techniques. Students will work closely with qualified instructors to gain a working knowledge and hands-on experience with basic field methods. Students will participate in all aspects of the field project including, but not limited to: historical research; logistical planning and implementation; field work and associated planning and orchestration including survey, excavation and data processing; and public outreach and access.

Archaeological Objectives

The primary objective for this investigation is to record any pertinent historical information contained within the site prior to its destruction.  To be able efficiently extract pertinent historical and archaeological information from this site a meticulous and detailed work plan needed to be established.  By reviewing the field map created by Wayne Lusardi in October 2004, the areas of potential interested were quickly identified.  Features such as the boathouse, supply shed, privy, cistern, and trash midden immediately leaped out as potential areas for investigations.  In order to correctly interpret these features, clearly defined secondary research objectives needed to be establish, taking into account the time frame of this project and the specific goals of the all those involved.  The following seven secondary objectives will be the guiding force behind the investigations on site.

  1. Create a detailed map of the entire site including all archaeological features and including all pertinent landscape information using a total station.

  2. Create a detailed architectural drawings of the boathouse, workshop, supply shed, privy, the log cabin, and the unidentified structure.

  3. Excavate and document the privy, including the retrieval of any diagnostic artifacts

  4. Excavate and document the cistern, including the retrieval of any diagnostic artifacts

  5. Bisect the trash midden with an excavation trench in order to identify any stratigraphy and/or occupational episodes and retrieve any diagnostic artifacts.

  6. Attempt to identify the structure which lies to the southeast of the log cabin.

  7. Excavate additional test units and/or shovel tests in order to fully document the site.  Placement of these will be determined in the field.
