U-166 Today

Final confirmation of the identity of the wreck believed to be U-166 came on May 31 and June 1, 2001, when a team from C&C Technologies, BP, Shell and the U.S. Minerals Management Service visited the site and examined the wreck closely with a remotely-operated vehicle -- "ROV" for short -- which allowed them a detailed, close-up look at the U-boat's remains. Although all Type IXC U-boats were similar in appearance, there were many small differences between them according to the shipyard where they were built and what time of the war they were completed. Based on the configuration of flooding holes in the hull and railing stanchions, the archaeologists at C&C Technologies were able to positively identify the boat as U-166.

Below are video clips taken by the ROV.
