Links to Yellowstone National Park, Underwater Archaeology and Education

There are many good websites where one can learn more about Yellowstone National Park, underwater archaeology and educational opportunities. Many of the ones we've found useful are listed here. Got another one for us? Drop us a line and let us know about it!

Yellowstone National Park Links

Yellowstone National Park -- The park's official website. Includes maps and seasonal guides, a comprehensive list of activities in the park, information on services available, and current park rules and regulations.

The Yellowstone Association -- The non-profit Yellowstone Association funds and provides educational products and services for Yellowstone National Park. The Yellowstone Association is the National Park Service's primary partner in providing educational programs, exhibits, and publications for park visitors.

Yellowstone Park Foundation -- A non-profit organization created by a group of concerned citizens, working with the National Park Service, to protect, preserve, and enhance Yellowstone National Park and to enrich each visitor's experience.
The foundation works to fund projects and programs which are beyond the financial capacity of the National Park Service.

Old Faithful Inn -- a website on the history and features of the Old Faithful Inn, the grandest of Yellowstone National Park's lodges, built in 1903-04. The Old Faithful Inn is among the largest log hotels in the world. But beyond the colossal scale and dramatic location, the hotel is remarkable in many other ways. While the inn featured all the amenities expected by wealthy travelers of the day (e.g., indoor plumbing and steam heat) it was the first hotel to project a Western sensibility of grandeur. Featured on the PBS series Great Lodges. The Great Lodges website has a special section for teachers.

Yellowstone Park Virtual Reality Panoramas -- An interactive map linking users to 360º panoramic views from locations in the park. Requires the Macintosh QuickTime viewer.

Yellowstone Park Webcams -- Real-time webcams located in and around Yellowstone National Park, including Old Faithful, Mammoth Hot Springs and Mount Washburn (back online spring 2003).

Kenneth Todar's Yellowstone Gallery and Maps -- Contains a selection of Yellowstone Park topographical maps and images of the park, including early works by Thomas Moran and William Henry Jackson.

YellowstonePark.com -- An unofficial website with information about the park and its resources.

Underwater Archaeology Links

Program in Maritime Studies  at East Carolina University -- The Maritime Program provides a thorough education for those interested in a professional career in maritime history and nautical archaeology.

National Park Service Submerged Cultural Resources Unit -- The NPS-SCRU is staffed by professional underwater archaeologists, technicians and other professionals to provide the United States national park system with the necessary expertise.

Steamboat Archaeology in National Geographic-- Think interesting shipwrecks are limited to salt water? Think again! Some of the most unusual sites are hundreds of miles from blue water.

Archaeology Education

The PAST Foundation -- Partnering Anthropology with Science and Technology. The PAST Foundation works to link kids with the science of archaeology and those who practice it around the globe.

The NPS Archaeology and Ethnography Program -- Site where young people and adults can learn more about archaeology and find opportunities to get hands-on experiences. Includes a long list of resources for teachers.

Portals to the Past -- Hosted by the University of California-Los Angeles, Portals to the Past is designed to help teachers integrate the study of past cultures into their curriculum. Includes a wide range of resources designed to demonstrate the concepts and processes of archaeological study.
