STEM Maker Space/Shop Manager

Full Time
$50,000

Position Information

Contract Duration: One year from start date, with strong potential for renewal based on performance, program outcomes, and continued funding.


The PAST STEM Maker Space/Shop Manager will lead the development and daily operation of our makerspace serving K–12 students and educators across Central Ohio. This proven team member will establish operational systems, safety protocols, curriculum integration, and community partnerships that support hands-on, problem-based learning in STEM. The Maker Space/Shop Manager will provide technical fabrication expertise, youth education experience, and entrepreneurial energy to launch a thriving, inclusive maker program.


  1. Space Operations & Safety

    1. Oversee day-to-day operations of the makerspaces (Maker Lab/Shop/Robotic Pits and Robotic field), ensuring it is safe, inclusive, organized, and welcoming.

    2. Develop, implement, and enforce safety protocols, standard operating procedures (SOPs), and training for all tools and equipment (e.g., 3D printers, laser cutters, CNC machines, soldering stations, electronics benches, woodworking tools).

    3. Manage scheduling of the space for classes, drop-in hours, clubs, and special events. 

    4. Maintain inventory of tools, consumables, and materials; coordinate purchasing, repair, and maintenance.

    5. Ensure compliance with all relevant institutional, local, and federal safety regulations.

    6. Document and report on space usage, equipment maintenance logs, and safety incidents.

  2. Instruction, Programming, and Curriculum Support

    1. Design and facilitate hands-on workshops, short courses, and maker challenges for diverse age groups and skill levels.

    2. Collaborate with teachers/faculty to integrate maker activities into STEM courses and cross-curricular projects.

    3. Provide one-on-one and small-group coaching on design, prototyping, and digital fabrication tools.

    4. Support or advise STEM-related extracurriculars, such as robotics teams, engineering clubs, coding groups, or media production.

    5. Curate and develop learning resources, project guides, and documentation for users of the makerspace.

  3. Collaboration and Community Building

    1. Recruit, train, and supervise student workers, volunteers, or part-time staff

    2. supporting the makerspace.

    3. Foster a collaborative, inclusive maker culture that encourages experimentation, persistence, and interdisciplinary projects.

    4. Partner with internal departments and external organizations (industry, local businesses, libraries, nonprofits) to expand opportunities, secure sponsorships, and host joint programs.

    5. Communicate the impact of the makerspace through showcases, exhibitions, demonstrations, and presentations to stakeholders, donors, and the community.

      Build and maintain relationships with partner schools, districts, and youth-serving organizations to expand program reach.

  4. Administration and Strategic Development

    1. Manage the makerspace budget (as delegated), including planning for equipment upgrades, maintenance, and supplies.

    2. Track and report usage metrics, learning outcomes, and program impact; use data to improve offerings and inform renewal decisions.

    3. Contribute to grant writing and fundraising efforts to support new equipment, outreach initiatives, or expanded hours.

    4. Stay current with emerging tools, technologies, and pedagogies in making, digital fabrication, and STEM education, and recommend strategic enhancements.

    5. Document best practices, lesson plans, and operational procedures for potential program continuity and future staff.

Required Qualifications
  • Demonstrated hands-on experience with one or more maker technologies, such as:

    • 3D modeling and 3D printing

    • Laser cutting / CNC machining

    • Electronics and microcontrollers (e.g., Arduino, Raspberry Pi)

    • Basic woodworking, metalworking, or other fabrication techniques

  • At least 2–3 years of experience in a makerspace, fabrication lab, STEM lab, or similar environment (can include teaching, lab management, or technical support roles).

  • Demonstrated experience teaching, training, or facilitating workshops for youth, students, or adults.

  • Strong organizational, communication, and problem-solving skills.

  • Demonstrated commitment to equity, inclusion, and diverse participation in STEM and making.

  • Valid driver's license and ability to travel as needed.

  • Ability to obtain background clearance and licensure as required by working with K–12 populations.


Compensation
  • $50,000 annually or commensurate with demonstrated experience


Work Environment & Conditions
  • Location: Primarily on-site in the PAST makerspace/Shop and affiliated school/community spaces

  • Schedule: Full-time, approximately 40 hours per week

  • Other Hours: Some evening or weekend hours required for special events, clubs, community workshops, or programs

  • Travel: Occasional travel to partner schools or community sites

  • Physical Environment: Work involves:

    • Standing, bending, and reaching for extended periods

    • Light to moderate lifting of equipment and materials (up to 50 lbs with assistance)

    • Exposure to workshop noise, dust, and fabrication equipment

    • Frequent interaction with diverse youth populations

    • Required use of personal protective equipment (PPE): safety glasses, ear protection, steel-toed boots, gloves (as appropriate)
